Поэтесса. Дебютировала в 1959 сборником стихов "Возлюбленные всего мира" ["Valentines to the Wide World"], после которого сразу получила известность. Среди других ее книг: "Увидеть, взять" ["To See, To Take"] (1970) - Национальная книжная премия [National Book Award], "Почти перемены" ["Near Changes"] (1990) - Пулитцеровская премия [Pulitzer Prize], "Огнепад" ["Firefall"] (1993), "Если бы не я. Сборник стихов" ["If It Be Not I: Collected Poems"] (1993). В 1992-93 носила звание "Поэта-лауреата США" [U.S. Poet Laureate]
